About the CCHS

The Canadian Church Historical Society exists to promote the scholarly study of the history of the Church in Canada, with a special interest in the Anglican Church.

Established in 1949 by the General Synod of the Anglican Church in Canada, the CCHS Board was originally drawn from the General Synod Archives Committee with representatives from all four ecclesiastical provinces. For many years, CCHS meetings and reports were a cornerstone of the General Synod.

Today, the Canadian Church Historical Society functions as a General Synod Committee—its Terms of Reference are enshrined in the General Synod Handbook—and sits as a member of the Council of General Synod.

Journal & Archives

In 1950, CCHS launched its Journal to publish research on church history, the development of the Anglican Archives, and the history of the Anglican Church of Canada. Now a peer-review journal issued annually, it remains the Society’s flagship publication. To submit, click the “Journal” tab above.

The General Synod Archives has partnered with CCHS since 1955, when the first General Synod Archivist joined to help promote interest in Anglican Church history—a role that continues to this day.
